You are invited

You are invited to join a very special church.

We are church that meets in a very special building.

We are a church that exists to help people to grow and learn as Christians, through mutual support and care.

We are a church which is adapting in a changing world.

We are a church that is part of a larger connected community, the Methodist Connexion.

We are church of young and old.

We are a church that takes worship seriously.

We are a church where there is room for doubt and questions.

We are a church that exists to be a good neighbour to people in need and to challenge injustice.

We are a church that is yearning to serve it’s community.

We are a church where welcome is important.

We are a church where the welcome is for everyone.

We are a church that exists to make more followers of Jesus Christ.

We are a church with challenges.

We are a church with opportunities.

We are a church that exists to increase awareness of God’s presence and to celebrate God’s love.

Whatever your stage of faith or religious background, you are welcome to come and be part of our life together. We normally meet for worship on Sundays; For peace and quiet on Monday lunchtimes; Tea, cake and chat on Wednesday afternoons and sometimes other things at other times.

In the coming months we’ll be exploring more change in how we manage and use our buildings; and how our church life can be refreshed by that. We’d warmly welcome offers of time, talents and prayers from anyone in our church family and beyond. Please speak to a Minister or Steward.

Our Scaffolding has gone!

We are delighted to celebrate that the scaffolding that has been gracing the front of our church building for the last 7+ months has finally been removed.

Our front entrance ready for use

During November a section of lime mortar cornice fell from within the ceiling of our portico area. No-one was hurt but we clearly needed to get the problem fixed and keep the area out of use. As our building is grade 2* listed, these things take time to get properly approved. In the meantime the church has remained active and open for worship and rooms bookings.

We’re very grateful for all those within the Methodist circuit and beyond who have assisted in getting the work done, and to contractors and subcontractors who worked so efficiently once the necessary consents were in place.

It’s good to be able to use our front doors again, and take up our proper place on St Saviourgate.

More details about the resources are available from the publisher.

(It would be helpful however if you could let Judith know in advance if you are joining us so she can make sure we have enough books – or sign up on the list in the hall. Thank you.)

Covenant Service 2019

‘I am no longer my own but yours.
Put me to what you will,
rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing,
put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you,
or laid aside for you,
exalted for you,
or brought low for you;
let me be full,
let me be empty,
let me have all things,
let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours.’

The Methodist Covenant Prayer

We’ll be holding our annual covenant service at Central on the 13th January. It is a service which many Methodists celebrate as one of the most important in the year. You can find more information about the tradition on the Methodist Church website.

Our service on the 13th January will start at 10:30am, and everyone is welcome to join us whether you are sharing in a Covenant Service for the first time, have done it annually for many years, or simply want to watch what others do. The service includes communion to which everyone is invited to take part.

Refreshments and chat available afterwards.

Services for Christmas 2018

Over the Christmas season we will be meeting for the following services:

  • 23rd December 10.30am – Holy Communion led by Rev Rory Dalgliesh.
  • 25th December 10am – all age worship led by Hilary Blake.
  • 30th December 10.30am – Morning worship led by Rev John Schofield.

Visitors and newcomers are always welcome to all our worship.

There are no afternoon or evening services at this time.

Damage to Our Portico

At some point in the night of Wednesday 28th November, some lime-mortar plaster came away from the ceiling underneath the Portico at the front of our church. Thankfully, no one was hurt. On discovery, Church and circuit staff acted quickly to make the area as safe as possible.

We have sought specialist advice, and are waiting for a further inspection of the damage. Scaffolding is being erected to enable this inspection, and protect people from any further falling debris.

The front steps of the church and portico area are likely to be out of action for some time until we are advised that all is safe. All church activities and other room bookings will go ahead as normal, with access via the side entrance. We are open as usual!

We value our special building, and everyone who uses it. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience whilst we work to make sure the area is repaired safely and appropriately.

Organ Vespers 25th November 2018

Organ Vespers

Sunday 25th November 6.30pm

The organ case

Drawing on a similar service in the German Lutheran tradition we offer a new approach which focuses on organ music appropriate to a time in the church year or special theme.
There are also some appropriate readings and the opportunity to join singing one or two hymns from the Methodist tradition.

On this occasion we mark the church anniversary, “Stir up Sunday”, the festival of Christ the King and look forward to the start of Advent.

All are welcome.
